Thank you to our members and community friends for your support of the Lakeside Historical Society.  The generosity through membership renewal, donation of items for fundraisers, financial gifts and your valuable volunteer time continues to keep this organization vital and gives opportunity for growth and future preservation activities.
One of these growth areas is in the education department of the society.  Cathy Hansen and several docents from the History Museum are very busy teaching Lakeside's local history to many 3rd grade classes--the preservationists of the future.  Most recent will be this May 17th and 18th when the Lindo Park School students will visit. The program for these students will be an elaborate coordination of history presentation and demonstrations, a tour of the buildings and grounds, and docents in costume. We have had requests to go to schools to give presentations, also. Our education program is becoming popular, and we are in need of Historical Society members to help in this department.  Do you like to tell stories, dress in costume, demonstrate daily living activities of times gone by, or put together slide and power point presentations on various history topics? We need you. Join the fun and lend your talents to help connect the public with Lakeside's diverse history.  Call me, let's talk: 561-0372.
A future activity is the Lakeside Auto Speedway Centennial and Heritage Day coming in the fall, Sunday, October 28th.  It truly will be a heritage day celebrating events in Lakeside of the 1907 era, most notably the races around Lindo Park. This will be a huge coordination of activities with an old-time car parade around the park, food, vendor booths and classic cars in the park. Also history display, silent auction, quilt opportunity drawing will be presented in the Lakeside Community Center. Costumes are encouraged.
Due to all the activity on that Sunday, it was decided to hold the Lakeside Hometown Reunion dinner the day before:  Saturday, October 27, 2007. Mark that day: 1:00 p.m. at the Lakeside Historical Society on Maine Avenue to attend the 30th annual Heritage Day dinner. Come to the Lakeside Auto Speedway Centennial Committee meeting on May 11th at 6:00 p.m. at the historical society if you want to help with the plans.
To get first hand information on the raising of the dam, several of our members went on the San Vicente Dam tour arranged by the California Water Authority. It was very informative and worth while. There will be another tour on May 19th -- call (858) 522-6724 for reservations.

That was part of our program at the April 23 meeting, along with some stories and slides about the town of Foster presented by Regis Rosner.  We also had a visit by a few of the "Regulators," an old west reenactment group from the Lakeside Highway Lions Club who livened things up a bit. They are a service group providing firearm safety education, raising money for charity and having fun with cookouts, shotgun wedding, and jail & bail outfit.  Some colorful characters, give them a call: (858) 560-7561.
Many thanks to all the helpers who put on the Western Days breakfast with their hours of preparation and endurance for a busy morning serving food and greeting visitors.  And big applause to Dixie and Ken Lansdowne for producing a wonderful parade float for the Historical Society that day -- really a nice effort.
Our May 21st general meeting will be about San Diego architecture. Lakeside resident, Lee Swennes, will give us some tips on some familiar buildings and tell us everything we ever wanted to know about collecting old bricks and their curiosities. Please note that meeting date changed due to the Memorial Day holiday. See you there at 7:00 p.m.
