Robert Williams was born in Blue Jacket, Oklahoma in 1912 and moved to California in 1926, with his parents. Claude and Opal Williams and a brother, Paul. They moved first to Pacific Beach, then to Ramona where Bob’s father, ‘Cap’ Claude Williams served as deputy sheriff. Bob was employed by Bisher Truck Line hauling milk from local dairies to San Diego Creameries. At a lunch stop at Joe Blews Hamburger stand on Woodside, he met Marcella Carender. The beautiful lane of Cork Elms provided a romantic setting for a proposal, and they were married at the Carender residence on Prospect September 29, 1935. Their first child, Edward, was born September 17, 1936, in Ramona.
When Bob changed jobs to Southern California Freight Line in 1940, they moved from Ramona to Lakeside, next door to the house on Prospect where Marcella had moved with her parents in 1929. Bob later worked with Stanley Conant in Oil Distributing; went into the trucking business with Chuck Newberry as a partner; and worked for Red Johnson Construction. He joined the Operating Engineers and worked for Hazard Construction Co. until his death in 1967. Bob and Marcella were charter members of the Between Dance Club, and enjoyed many camping and hunting trips as well as many week-ends at their trailer at Angel’s Point on the coast of Mexico.
Four other children were born to the Williams: Marlene (1940) married Bob Young and their children are Christa, Robert and Richard. She was divorced and now resides with husband Ray Wilson in Lakeside; Sandra (1944) and Dale Melville have four children, Ted, Tim, Dalene and Danell, who live in Lakeside; Jim (1948) served three years in the Marine Corps (one year in Vietnam). In 1969 he lost his sight in a near fatal accident and lives with his mother; Don (1952) followed in his father’s footsteps and is a heavy equipment operator, residing in El Cajon. Eddie died in 1982. His wife Diane, and daughters Deborah, Martha and Donna all reside in the San Marcos-Vista area. There are six great grandchildren.
Marcella was a clerk/secretary for the Lakeside School District from 1955 till her retirement in 1975. She was a charter member of the Tawasi Club and the Lakeside Garden Club, receiving an Honorary Life Membership in the California State Garden Club. She was awarded an Honorary Life Membership in the Parent Teacher Association in 1954; and, in 1982 was chosen as the Woman of the Year by Soroptimists International of Lakeside. She has been involved in the Lakeside Historical Society since its inception, serving two terms as president.
